Making Choices – One Sip at a Time
To our loyal Market Buffet family – we’re sure you’ve seen this post on our Facebook account recently:
And we wanted to clear the air! Yes, we have decided to join the strawless movement, joining a number of local and global hospitality organizations that are banning the use of single use plastic items. And while we are sorry to see that a few of our customers have decided not to return due to this new direction, we are ecstatic to see the amount of support that further reinforces our decision!
As we grow as a business, we begin to see how our choices have a greater impact on more than just our local community. We’d like to share a few reasons that we have decided to join this movement:
Single-use plastic straws are terrible for our planet.
An estimate of 57 MILLION straws are used and disposed of in Canada EVERY DAY. Of those that are not properly disposed of, many can make their way in tiny particles to our water sources, rivers and oceans.
Plastics are being ingested by wildlife.
It’s been estimated that over 70% of seabirds and 30% of turtles who call our planet’s oceans home have been found to have ingested microplastics. This potentially harms animals and in some cases, makes it into our food sources.
Straws are NOT recyclable.
Plastic straws are made from polypropylene, a petroleum-based plastic and a non-renewable resource used to make single-use, disposable items. Even if every single use straw was properly disposed of and did not wind up in the ocean, plastic straws are not recyclable and would take years to decompose. Visit Barrie.ca to see where straws go!
Straws can make you gassy?
Okay, so drinking through a straw does not produce the same embarrassing effect as beans or ingesting other foods might, but the action of drinking with a straw can cause you to take excess air into the stomach with each sip – which can result in unnecessary bloating.
If you’d like to learn more about the strawless movement, or take your own steps in moving towards a strawless establishment read here: www.strawlesschallenge.com
Finally, we are aware that some of our guests may not to be able to fully enjoy their beverage experience at Market Buffet due to a disability or condition that they are living with beyond their control. For these customers we will, of course, have straws available upon request – simply ask a server or staff member and we will be happy to help!
Thank you for your patience in this transition, and we hope to see you again soon!
